There was no early warning system in place

Whol towns and villages were destroyed so over 1.7 million people lost their homes

Infrastructure such as roads, electricity, hospitals and schools were severely damaged

5-6 million people needed emergency food water and medical supplies

Why was there massive economic damage?
Fishermen lost their livelihoods and tourism dipped as people were afraid to go on holiday there

Why was there massive environmental damage?
Salt from the seawater killed many plants. Mangroves, coral reefs, forests and sand dunes that protected the landscape were also destroyed by the waves

What was provided as aid?
Water, food, tents and plastic sheeting

$7 billion was donated worldwide to the affected countries

£330 million (more than the government!)

They provided ships, planes, soldiers and specialists to rescue, clear and distribute aid

Why have programmes been introduced?
To re-build the infrastructure and help people get back to work

What has been put in place to protect against future tsunamis?
A tsunami warning system has been put in place in the Indian Ocean and some disaster management plans introduced, training volunteers
