The nervous system enables humans to....
react to their surroundings and coordinate their behaviour.
1 of 11
Information from ____ passes along the cells, called neurons, in nerves to the brain.
Receptors
2 of 11
What are nerve impulses?
Electrical Signals that travel along neurons, at very high speeds.
3 of 11
What are receptors?
They detect stimuli which include light, sound, changes in position, chemicals, touch, pressure, pain and temperature.
4 of 11
What are sensory neurons?
They transmit nerve impulses from the receptors to the CNS when a stimulus is detected.
5 of 11
What are motor neurons?
They transmit nerve impulses from the CNS to the effectors, to bring about a response.
6 of 11
What are effectors?
These are muscles or glands.
7 of 11
What are the two areas if the nervous system?
The Central Nervous System (CNS) and the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
8 of 11
What is the Central Nervous System?
The brain and the spinal chord - this coordinates the response.
9 of 11
What is the Peripheral Nervous System?
This consists of nerves connecting the CNS to the rest of the body, e.g. the optic nerve and sciatic nerve.
10 of 11
What are nerves?
Bundles of motor and sensory neurones.
