Respiratory Volume Response to Exercise and Recovery

?
Respiratory Volume Response to Exercise and Recovery
Anatomy and Physiology
1 of 8
Breathing rate response to exercise
Breathing rate increases initially in proportion to exercise intensity until we approach the maximum of around 50-60 breaths per minute.
2 of 8
Breathing rate during sub-maximal exercise
Breathing rate can plateau due to the supply of oxygen meeting the demand from the working muscles.
3 of 8
Tidal volume response to exercise
Increase initially in proportion to exercise intensity at sub-maximal intensities up to approximately 3 litres .
4 of 8
Tidal volume during maximal exercise
Reaches a plateau because increased breathing rate towards maximal intensities does not allow enough time and requires too much muscular effort for maximal inspirations / expirations.
5 of 8
Minute ventilation response to exercise and recovery
Increases in line with exercise intensity.
6 of 8
Minute ventilation during sub-maximal exercise
Plateaus due to the supply meeting the demand for oxygen delivery and waste removal. .
7 of 8
Minute ventilation during maximal exercise
Does not plateau as exercise intensity continues to increase and there is still a growing demand for oxygen and waste removal which VE must strive to meet.
