What is respiratory?
a chemical process of releasing energy from organic compounds

What happens in the mouth, nose and nasal cavity during respiration

Pharynx, down pass the larynx into the trachea and then onto the bronchi

What is the trachea made of? what does it produce and what for?
walls are muscle lined with ciliated epithelium and goblet cells. Goblet cells produce mucus to trap dirt particles and bacteria from the air.

Brochioles are made of muscle lining with epithelial cells, what does this help with?
Muscle allows them to constrict so that they can control the flow of air in and out of the alveoli

What are alveoli?
minute air sacs at the end of the bronchioles

What do alveoli contain?
elastic fibres and collagen and are lined with epithelium

What is the alveotar membrane
The gas exchange surface

What is the diaphragm?
a broad band of muscle underneath the lungs forming the base of the thoracic cavity

What are pleural membranes?
they encase the lungs and secrete pleural fluid to reduce the friction from the movement of the lungs during breathing

What is pulmonary ventilation?
a measure of how much air is taken in and out of the lungs in a given time. The total volume of air that is moved into the lungs during one minute.
