Respiration and Exercise

?
What is Respiration?
The process of releasing energy from glucose which goes on in every cell
1 of 16
Where/when does Aerobic Respiration take place?
Continuosly in both plants and animals, in the mitochondria of cells
2 of 16
What is Aerobic Respiration and what is the equation for it?
Respiration using oxygen, Glucose + Oxygen -- Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy
3 of 16
What is the energy released during oxygen used for?
To build larger molecules from smaller ones, to allow muscles to contract, maintain a steady body temperature, build up amino acids from from sugars nitrates and other nurtrients (in plants)
4 of 16
What are the effects of exercise on the body?
Increases heart rate, rate and depth of breathing increases, more co2 is removed from the blood
5 of 16
What happens to the muscles during vigorous exercise?
an increase in muscle activity requires more glucose and oxygen to be supplied to the muscle cells
6 of 16
What's the equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose --> Energy + Lactic Acid
7 of 16
When does Anaerobic respiration happen?
When there isn't enough oxygen reaching the muscles
8 of 16
What causes muscle fatigue?
The build up of lactic acid in the muscles when they've been carrying out vigorous activity for a long timeW
9 of 16
What removes lactic acid?
Blood flowing through the muscles
10 of 16
What type of respiration releases the most energy?
Aerobic Respiration
11 of 16
What does Anaerobic respiration mean?
Respiration without oxygen, the incomplete breakdown of glucose
12 of 16
What is an Oxygen debt?
This is when you have to repay the oxygen that didn't get to your muscles in time, the oxygen needed to oxidise the lactic acid into carbon dioxide and water
13 of 16
What happens when the heart rate increases?
There is an increase in blood flow to the muscles
14 of 16
What is Glucose stored as in the muscles?
Glycogen
15 of 16
What happens to Glycogen during exercise?
It's broken down into glucose in the muscles
