Respiration

?
What is the definition of respiration?
Respiration is the process of breaking down glucose to release energy, which happens in ever living cell.
1 of 12
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
glucose + oxygen --> carbon dioxide and water (and energy)
2 of 12
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
3 of 12
Where does the glucose needed for respiration come from in humans?
The glucose needed comes from breaking down food in our digestive systems.
4 of 12
Where does the oxygen come from that is needed?
The oxygen comes from when we breathe into our lungs. This is the way that carbon dioxide is also breathed out.
5 of 12
How does the oxygen/carbon dioxide get into/out of our blood?
The gases DIFFUSE through capillaries which are tiny blood vessels, due to their being a lower concentration in the other area so they move there instead (e.g. oxygen in lungs to oxygen in blood)
6 of 12
What happens with respiration when you exercise?
In exercise, your muscles need more energy to contract so the rate of respiration increases. This means you need more oxygen so your breathing rate increases for more oxygen and your heart rate increases to get this oxygen to your muscles quicker.
7 of 12
What is cardiac output?
Cardiac output is the volume of blood the heart pumps in one minute - it increases as heart rate increases.
8 of 12
How do you work out cardiac output?
cardiac output = heart rate x stroke volume.
9 of 12
What is anaerobic respiration?
This is what happens when there is not enough oxygen available. It causes a build up of lactic acid, but it means you can use your muscles for longer.
10 of 12
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration?
glucose --> lactic acid (and energy)
11 of 12
What is EPOC?
EPOC stands for excess post exercise oxygen consumption. This is when you have finished exercising (anaerobically) and you have an oxygen debt due to not enough oxygen during the exercise time. This is why you keep breathing hard when you've finished
