Respiration

?
What is respiration?
A chemical reaction that releases energy in living things by convertying glucose and oxygen
1 of 23
What is the equation for respiration?
glucose+oxygen --> carbon dioxide+water
2 of 23
Where does respiration take place?
In living cells in the cytoplasm
3 of 23
Why is respiration important?
Cells need to repsire to stay alive
4 of 23
What is an important product that respiration produces?
Energy
5 of 23
What is the energy from respiration used for?
used for cells to move, grow and respond. MRS GREN (movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion, nutrition
6 of 23
How do cells release energy?
By breaking down glucose usually using oxygen
7 of 23
Name some parts of the respiratory system?
bronchi, bronchioles, ribs, alveoli (air sacs), diaphragm, lungs, rib muscles, trachea
8 of 23
What is the diaphragm?
A muscular sheet
9 of 23
What happens in the alveoli?
gas exchange
10 of 23
What is the function of the ribs?
To protect the chest
11 of 23
What is special about the trachea?
It has stiff rings of cartilage to prevent it from collapsing
12 of 23
Why are the alveoli good at exchanging gases?
They have a large surface area, they havea good blood supply and they are moist
13 of 23
How do the gases diffuse in gas exchange?
They diffuse across the wall of the air sac into the capillary and blood stream
14 of 23
What gases are involved in gas exchange and what happens to them?
Oxygen is absorbed and Carbon dioxide is released
15 of 23
What happens when blood containing fresh air passes through your lungs?
Its red blood cells fill up with oxygen
16 of 23
How much nitrogen is breathed in and how much is breathed out? (%)
79% is breathed in, 79% is breathed out
17 of 23
How much oxygen is breathed in and how much is breathed out? (%)
21% is breathed in, 16-18% is breathed out
18 of 23
How much carbon dioxide is breathed in and how much is breathed out? (%)
0.04% is breathed in, 4% is breathed out
19 of 23
Where are the alveoli and what are they?
Your windpipe divides into two and then into millions of branches. At the end of each branch is a cluster of air pockets called alveoli, surrounded by a fine network of blood vessels
20 of 23
What effect does smoking have on your lungs?
It damages your lungs; it makes your them grey and think with tar. They can't take in much oxygen
21 of 23
What effect does smoking have on your general health (not including your lungs)?
It increases your risk of having cancer, heart disease and stroke. On average smokers like 13 years less than non smokers so it makes your life expectancy shorter
22 of 23
What do oxygen and carbon dioxide pass between?
The blood and the air
