What is respiration?
The process whereby energy stored in complex organic molecules (e.g. carbohydrates) is used to make ATP.
1 of 10
Why do plants, animals and microorganisms need to respire?
To produce energy needed for biological processes.
2 of 10
List six metabolic processes that require energy.
Active Transport, Secretion, Endocytosis, Synthesis of large molecules from small ones, Replication of DNA, Movement, Activation of chemicals
3 of 10
Anabolic reaction
Reaction in which Large molecules are synthesised from smaller molecules in a condensation reactions
4 of 10
Catabolic reactions
Large molecules are hydrolysed into smaller ones
5 of 10
What is ATP?
Adenosine Triphosphate: ATP is the universal energy currency. ATP is a phosphorylated nucleotide.
6 of 10
Describe the structure of ATP
Each molecule consists of adenosine(adenine and a ribose sugar) plus three phosphate groups.
7 of 10
Explain why ATP is known as the universal energy currency.
It releases energy in small manageable amounts for powering chemical reactions in cells, found in all living cells.
8 of 10
ATP is a nucleic acid/ nucleotide derivative. Is it derived from DNA or RNA nucleotides?
ATP is derived fron RNA because the sugar in adenosine is a ribose sugar
9 of 10
How is energy transferred from photoautotrophs to ATP molecules?
Photoautotrophs use energy from the sun in photosynthesis, to make large organic molecules that contain chemical potential energy. Respiration release this energy, which is used to phosphorylated ADP to make ATP. This Transfers energy to ATP
