What is aerobic repsiration?
Respiration with oxygen
1 of 17
What is aerobic respiration's equation?
glucose + water -> carbon dioxide + water + energy
2 of 17
What organelle is used for aerobic respiration?
Mitochondria
3 of 17
What does the blood contain?
glucose and oxygen
4 of 17
What kind of things is the energy used for?
Building large molecules, maintaining body temperature, making amino acids, muscles contraction
5 of 17
What is respiration used for as a storage substance?
Glycogen
6 of 17
What is glycogen made up of?
Smaller molecules of glucose
7 of 17
How does the breathing rate increase?
1) oxygen-> alveoli 2) oxygen -> blood (contains glucose) 3) go to muscle cells (for contraction)
8 of 17
How does the heart rate increase?
It takes faster time for the glucose and oxygen to travel through the blood, to create as much energy during aerobic respiration
9 of 17
What happens to the glycogen during exercise?
Releases the glucose for respiration
10 of 17
What two other things happen during exercise?
Breathing depth increases, vasodilation
11 of 17
What is the chemical equation of anaerobic respiration?
Glucose -> lactic acid + energy
12 of 17
When is anaerobic respiration needed?
When theres insufficient oxygen reaching muscles
13 of 17
What makes anaerobic respiration less efficient than aerobic?
it doesn't use oxygen, it is an incomplete breakdown of glucose, releases less energy
14 of 17
What does a build up of lactic acid cause?
Muscle fatigue
15 of 17
Why do we breathe heavily after an exercise?
To regain the oxygen we lost during anaerobic respiration (oxygen debt)
16 of 17
Write down the equation when lactic acid is oxidised
Lactic acid + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water
17 of 17
