Respiration

What is the difference between aerobic and anaerobic respiration?
AEROBIC respiration takes place in the presence of oxygen and releases lots of energy. ANAEROBIC takes place without oxygen but only releases a little energy. This only occurs is muscles and yeast.

Where does gas exchange occur in humans and why are they well adapted?
Alveoli. They have: 1.A large surface area 2.Thin walls for short diffusion distances 3.Moist walls for gases to dissolve 4.Permeable surfaces so gases can get through 5. A good blood supply 6. A diffusion gradient

What are the main respiratory surface in plants and why are they well adapted?
Cells surrounding the air spaces in leaves. They are: 1.Thin 2.Permeable 3.Moist and 4. There are many to give a large surface area

What do we do to bring in a larger volume of air and increase the rate of gas exchange when exercising?
1. Increase our depth of breathing 2. Increase our rate of breathing

What does the amount of energy we need depend in?
1. Age: young people need more energy than old people as they are still growing 2. Gender: Cis boys need more energy than cis girls as they tend to have a larger body mass 3.Level of Activity: more active people require more energy
9 of 12
What are the signs one person if fitter than another while exercising?
-A lower breathing rate at rest -A slower rate of increase -A lower maximum breathing rate -A faster recovery
10 of 12
What is the purpose of respiration?
-It is an exothermic reaction taking place in the mitochondria -It is a series of chemical reactions that takes place in every living cell to release energy from food molecules that can be used for heat, growth, movement, active transport

How do you measure the energy released in Joules from burning food?
Energy released in Joules = mass of water x rise in water temperature x 4.2
