Where was social support present in Asch's study?
In one variation, he introduced an ally who would also give the right answer (and resist the majority). This caused conformity levels to drop sharply, from 33%-5.5%. The presence of an ally gave confidence to the participants decision.

Why is social support important in resisting conformity?
Supporters are likely to disrupt the unanimity of the majority whcih makes people think of other ways of responding, hence breaking the conformity.

Milgram, 1963

Where was social support present in Milgram's study?
In one variation, there were 3 'learners', and 2 were confederates who consistantly refused to shock them. Their defiance had conformity rates drop down to 10% reaching 450v.

Why is social support important in resisting obedience?
It is often difficult to stand up against the authority because other peoples obedience makes a harmful action seem acceptable. Disobedience of others can change that perception. Disobedient peers act as role models for other individuals.

What is locus of control?
This refers to someone's perception of personal control over their own behaviour.

What is high internal locus of control?
People believe everything that happens to them in life is due to their own behaviours that they control - independent behaviour, rely less on others opinions - better able to resist social influence.

What is high external locus of control?
People believe what happens to them is due to other people or luck. They feel things that happen to them are out of their control. Passive attitude, taking less responsibility for their actions, more likely to accept the influence of others

What characteristics to internals have that help to resist social influence?
More like leaders, achievement orientated, active seekers of information themselves - don't rely on others

EVALUATION: Social support, the importance of response order
Allen & Levine, 1969 - confederate with the right answer answered 1st, compared to answering 4th(real participant always answers last) support was higher when confederate was 1st - when confirming participants own judgement
