Experimental Method: Dis and Adv
used to establish cause and effect relationship. This is done by manipulating the IV and DV- all variables are highly controlled as it is lab based. But this results in low ecological validity. Field exp- high ecological validity and low control
1 of 13
Correlational Method: Advanatage
Allows researcher to analyse a rela between 2 variables when the 1 or both variables cannot be manipulated.
2 of 13
Correlational Method: Disadvatage
Cause and effect cannot be shown- only identifies a relationship
3 of 13
Repeated Measures design
Same pps in both conditions- Adv- Pps variables are eliminated and fewer pps needed. Dis- order effect- although counterbalancing can control this but you cant use same material in both conditions.
4 of 13
Independent Group design
Pps are randomly allocated to a condition. Adv- no order effect and same materials can be used. Dis- Pps variables are introduced and diff can be caused because of this and more pps are needed.
5 of 13
Matched Pair design
Pairs of pps are matched and randomly allocated to diff conditions. Adv- No oder effect and attempts to control pps variables. Dis- Difficult to match pps and more pps are required
6 of 13
Observational Methods
Aim of this: Control variables that might influence behavior
7 of 13
Naturalistic Observational Method
Adv- Natural behav is observed and high ecological validity. Dis- Little control over confounding variables.
8 of 13
Controlled Observational Method
Adv- Control over confounding variables. Dis- Behavior may not be normal or natural= demand characteristics.
9 of 13
Participant and Non- Participant
P- Adv- Easier to understand and high ecological validity. Dis- Hard to record observations and data can be subjective. N-P- Adv- more reliable and objective- Dis- Meaning behind the behaviour may not be recorded.
10 of 13
Surveys
Gather info on topic on a large number of pps- Gathered by ques- closed or open q. Adv- large amount of data and reduced interpersonal factors. Dis- low response rate and this reduces validity of findings, social desirability bias + not flexible.
11 of 13
Interviews
Face to Face or structured or unstructured. Adv- more flexible and able to clarify answers. Dis- interaction with pps may affect data and time consuming.
12 of 13
Case Study
Adv- Rich and meaningful data- e.g. KF- memory. Dis- difficult to generalize and low population validity and difficult to replicate and examine reliability of results.
