Laboratory experiment
an experiment that takes place in controlled environment within which the researcher manipulates the IV and records the effect on the DV, whilst maintaining strict control of extraneous variables
1 of 15
Positives of laboratory experiments
high control over EV's; can be replicated (variables operationalised;procedures standardised & high control) so can check if original findings are valid
2 of 15
Negatives of laboratory experiments
difficult to generalise results (artificial environment so behaviour is not natural)- low external validity
3 of 15
Negatives of laboratory experiments
tasks lack mundane realism- they do not represent real life experiences- low external validity
4 of 15
Field experiment
an experiment that takes places in a natural setting within which the researcher manipulates the IV and records the effect on the DV
5 of 15
Positives of field experiments
higher mundane realism than in the lab- behaviour is more valid and authentic- higher external validity
6 of 15
Positives of field experiments
less chance of demand characteristics if participants do not know they are being studied
7 of 15
Negatives of field experiments
less control over EV's, so it is difficult to establish cause and effect between the IV and the DV
8 of 15
Negatives of field experiments
difficult to replicate (less control); also ethics such as lack on consent
9 of 15
Natural experiment
an experiment where the IV is not manipulated by the researcher, but changes in it occur naturally, the researcher then records the effect on the DV
10 of 15
Positives of natural experiments
can study behaviours not pratical/ethical to manipulate; real life so high external validity
11 of 15
Negatives of natural experiments
rare for the event to occur so difficult to replicate; difficult to control EV's so reduces internal validity
12 of 15
Quasi experiments
a study that is almost an experiment but lacks key ingredients. The IV has not been determined by anyone (researcher or any other person)- the variables simply exist such as being old or young
13 of 15
Positives of Quasi expeiments
if carried out in a lab then share the same strengths as a lab experiment
14 of 15
Negatives of quasi experiment
difficult to control EV's
