Target Population
The large group of people the researcher wishes to study.

Sample
The small group of people who represents the target population and who are studied.

Representative
The sample of participants is made up of people who have the same characteristics and abilities as the target population.

Generalised
The results from the sample can be applied to the general population.

Opportunity Sampling
Most used psychology students. Take sample from people available at the time and fit the criteria you are looking for.

Random Sampling
Every member of the population has an equal chance of being chosen. Identify everyone in the target population and then select the number of participants you need in a way that gives everyone in the population an equal chance of being picked.

Stratified sampling
Classify the population into categories and choose a sample which consists of participants from each category in the same proportions as they are in the population.

Systematic sampling
Select every nth number (chosen by researcher) of the the target population and make them your sample. It is unbiased because the researcher cant choose who takes part.

Experimental Condition
Where you can manipulate a variable to see the results

Control condition
Where nothing is manipulated so that we have a bass line to compare results with.
