Lab experiment
A true experiment, conducted in an artificial environment, in which the experimenter manipulates an IV and measures the changes against the DV whilst controlling ex variables.
1 of 15
Field experiment
A true experiment in which the researcher manipulates an IV and measures a DV in the natural setting of the participants.
2 of 15
Natural experiment
A study in which the experimenter makes use of an existing change or difference in situations to provide levels of an IV and then measures the DV in each condition.
3 of 15
Correlational analysis
A technique used to investigate a link between two measured variables.
4 of 15
Questionnaire
A self-report method used to obtain data by asking participants to provide information about themselves using written questions.
5 of 15
Interview
A self-report method used to obtain data by asking participants to provide information about themselves by replying verbally to questions asked by an interviewer.
6 of 15
Case study
A method which focuses on a single instance- e.g one person or one family or institution which is explored in detail.
7 of 15
Content analysis
A method of indirect observation which assesses the themes and concepts expressed in communication media such as transcribed speech or the printed word.
8 of 15
Observation
A technique in which the researcher watches and records the behaviour of participants.
9 of 15
Open question (qualitative data)
One that can be answered in any way the participant chooses. Views and opinions.
10 of 15
Closed question (quantitative data)
Limits the responses that can be made. Yes or no and numerical.
11 of 15
Structured interview
Has a pre-set order of questions, leaving little room for the researcher to follow up on answers of interest
12 of 15
Experimental hypothesis
A statement made about the predicted outcome of the study.
13 of 15
Participant design
How the participants are distributed between the experimental conditions.
14 of 15
Spearman's rank correlation
Used if what is being tested is a relationship, not a difference. The level of measurement is ordinal.
