Before 2008, all candidates had been white males. Looking at the makeup of congress, this is unsurprising. It is an advantage to be married (only one bachelor president). Scandal involving marital infidelity could end chances. There are exceptions.

During the candidate selection process, major partiees cannot endorse candidates. Therefore canddiates cannot use their organisation structure and must create their own. Bob Dole and Micheal Dukakis lost due to bad organisation. Obama in 2008 better.

Summarise Oratorical skills.
Media age; must speak well and look good on the tv. 'I'm no good at television' Republican Candidate (1984) Walter Mondale complained. 1996 Phil Gramm 'i'm too ugly to be president' Obama displayed these factors well in 2008.
22 of 23
Summarise Sound and Relevant Policies
Textbook: voters will detect candidate who has 'policy free zone' but this has been rebuked by Trump who largely flip flopped on policy and had no ready ones to implement and no attempt to with work congress e.g. executive orders (travel ban, Deport)
