What do the testes produce?
Sperm (spermatogenesis), hormones (oestrogen and testosterone), fluid (to transport sperm from testes and aid their survival)

Why are the testes situated outside the body?
So they can be kept lower than normal body temperature

What is the tunica vaginalis?
Layer of membrane which is a continuation of the peritoneum

What should happen is a retained testicle is within the abdomen?
Not at ideal temperature for sperm production - therefore increased risk of it becoming cancerous and should be removed

What is each testis composed of?
Bind ended ducts called seminiferous tubules - connective tissue between them

What two types of cells do the seminferous tubules contain?
Spermatogenic cells - divide by meiosis to produce spermatozoa, sertoli cells - produce oestrogens and nutrtional fluid for the sperm

What are interstitial cells?
Connective tissue surrounding the seminiferous tubules that contains Leydig cells

What do interstitial cells produce?
Testosterone - responsible for spermatogenesis (sperm formation) and the development of maintenance of secondary male characteristics

Function of the epididymis
Store the sperm as they mature

Function of the Vas Deferens/Deferent Duct
Carry sperm from the epididymis to the urethra, the bite you tie off when doing a vasectomy!

What are the common prostate diseases
Neoplasis (cancer), abscesses (prostate acute/chronic) and infection

Clinical signs you expect to see with prostatic disease
Anuria (sessation of urine and haematuria (blood) in urine, stiff gait, constipation and pain
