A dream is something out of our control, yet the victim still appears in his mind even when he's not in control. Inescapable. Also the repetition of the word "dozen" shows he can remember even the smallest details, which intensifies the trauma.

Metaphor. Placing him on the opposing side makes the victim seem like an opponent, as if he's something to fear something that makes him feel unsafe.

Alliteration of the 's' sound. Places emphasis on the idea of abandoning the memory somewhere where it can't be remembered, he wants to forget about it.

Rhyming couplet. Exaggerates how the soldier want to bury the memory or loose it in this "distant" place. Shows his want to escape from it and his need for freedom.
