In Edinburgh in the 1800's, the Nelsons (a Christian factory), who made their money from printing and publishing, built four libraries for the use of working men and contributed to the building of the royal infirmary.

He set up a series of homes to help destitute children with the financial support of other Christian Philanthropists - e.g. Lord Shaftesbury. The organisation he founded still exists today helping children and their families.
