What is Death?
Death is when a person's physical body stops functioning-when brain activity stops.

Is Death when your heart stops?
If the heart stops no blood sent to the brain which shuts down all body organs. In some operations the heart is stopped and we carry on living afterwards. Solution= peacemaker.

Is Death when you stop breathing?
If the lungs stop the blood has no oxygen and so the brain would die. Dead people don't breathe. But people can hold their breath. Solution= a Ventilator.

Is Death when your organs stop working?
Without our organs we would not be alive. But many live with damaged organs for example kidneys. Solution= dialysis machine.

Is Death when your brain stops functioning?
Doctors check the brain stem for electrical activity when a decision about life support is being made. Once the brain stem has stopped working, you can't recover from whatever problems you have.

An example of a case study
Tony Bland was an 18 year old Liverpool fan who went to Hillsborough stadium to watch Liverpool play Nottingham forest. Tony Bland was seriously injured with crushed ribs and 2 punchtered lungs. He was left in a PVS state.
