Deterrance
The idea that a punishment is so severe it will stop or deterr people from commiting the crime. The prospect of the punishment outweighs the crime.

Retribution
Taking revenge on a criminal fr their actions.

Protection
Putting a dangerous criminal in prison/keeping them away from the public for public safety.

Reparation
Paying compensation for an action done or giving something back to the community. e.g. community service or compensation

Refromation
The idea that punishments can change an offenders attitude in order to make them a better or changed person.

Vindication
The idea that laws must be severly upheld in order to enforce the fact that they should be repected.

Parloe
Temporary or permanent release of a prisoner before their sentence runs out, on the promise of good behaviour. If they reoffend during this period, they will get a harsher sentence.

Probation
When previous offenders meet with a probation officer to prevent re offending and monitor their behaviour.

Restorative justice
Offenders must attend sessions where they see why their crime was wrong and its affect on the victim.

Curfew
When an offender has to return home by a certain time - it can also be used with electronic tagging.
