1) It is traditional, defnding customs and moral views. 2) Conserves things, stabilising society.

Conservative religious beliefs:
Opposes change allowing freedom. E.G. Catholic church (abortion, homosexuality, contraception) Upholds family values, division of labour (vows)

Functionalist persepctive of religion as a conservative force
Social stability maintained, prevents disintegration. Value consensus reduces chance of collapsing and pursing self-interest. Prevents disruption.

Marxist perspective of religion as a conservative force
Ideology preventing change. Legitimates explotation, FCC preventing revolution.

Feminist persepctive of religion as a conservative force
Ideology legitimating patriarchy. Maintains womens subordination in the family and wider society.
