Religion and consensus (conservative)
Functionalists see religion as a C force, it maintains social stability, prevents disintegration, helps people deal with stresses that could disrupt society. Toteism before, church gathering now.

Religion and capitalism (conservative)
Religion helps to maintain the status quo, it legitimates and justifies exploitation and creates false consciousness, doing so maintains capitalist society. Eg caste system still exists

Religion and patriarchy (conservative)
Religion is an ideological conservative force, it legitimates and maintains patriarchal power and the subordination of women. Women couldnt be priest before, religious people still frown on women being professional clergy.

Weber- Calvinist belief (change)
Calvinism believes that people are elected to go to 'heaven' before birth, so to prove this, they have a strong work ethic, so they became more wealthy. They didn't conform to consumerism, so invested profits into business. This brought capitalism

Bruce- Social protest (change)
Looks at the use of religion in the American Civil Rights Movement. Black clergy had major role in acts of protests, used religious quotes- 'love thy neighbor'- and used churches for meetings, he promoted christian values.

New Christian Right (change)
In USA, look for change to the traditional values- no abortion, divorce, gay marriages, no sex edu. They wanted to take USA 'back to God'. However they use modern techno. to bring the change about, eg televangelism. Has been unsuccessful

Maduro- Liberation theology (change)
Neo marxist. In Latin America, Catholic Church opposed the military dictatorship, by helping the poor- shelter, food, edu. Change wasn't permanent, church was soon oppressed, told it had to focus on pastoral activities, not political ones.

Bruce- Fundamentalists (change)
Fundamentalists have come about due to modern society. They look to change society back to traditional religions. These groups usually have political power, eg 9/11 was the act of extream Islamists, their hate for the western world and its influence
