Reliability RM

?
What are the three types of reliability?
Researcher, Internal and External
1 of 13
When is researcher reliability relevant?
When there is more than one researcher in a study.
2 of 13
What is a type of researcher reliability?
Inter-rater reliability, this is specific to observation studies
3 of 13
How could you assess researcher reliability?
repeat the study, make it as objective as possible (the categories/questions used)
4 of 13
How could you improve researcher reliability?
1. focus on the design of the study, use detailed standardised instructions to ensure consistency 2.careful training of researchers, they should know exactly how to carry out the study.
5 of 13
What is internal reliability?
this refers to the consistency of the measure or test used in the study itself.
6 of 13
What can internal reliability be applied to?
observations, self reports and tests.
7 of 13
How could you assess internal reliability?
using the split half technique.
8 of 13
What is the split half technique?
you randomly split the questions or observation categories in two and then you correlate them, strong/positive correlation indicates internal reliability.
9 of 13
How could you improve internal reliability?
change the questions or categories which proved unreliable.
10 of 13
What is external reliability?
Also known as test-retest reliability, it refers to the consistency of the study or measure from one occasion to another (different times).
11 of 13
How could you asses external reliability?
you could take out the questions that didnt correlate and replace them.
12 of 13
How could external reliability be improved?
you could change the questions of categories that were previously used that didnt correlate.
