God created the world in 6 days and rested on the 7th (Genesis). First= the world (air, water, land, sun, moon, stars and seasons). Second= life (birds, fish, land animals and then humans).

Fundamentalists take story of the Bible literally. Conservatives believe story does not need to be taken literally and should focus on WHY the world was created. Liberals believe the Bible was inspired by God so do not interpret the story literally.

The Big Bang and Evolution?
About 15 billion years ago= huge explosion= cloud of dust & gas. Cloud settled to form universe. Earth= mud. Proteins& amino acids fuse mud together. Simple life forms developed. Humans evolved from apes. First human= five millions years ago.

What is the Buddhist belief about the creation of the world?
Buddhism has no creator god to explain the origin of the universe. Instead, it teaches that everything depends on everything else: present events are caused by past events and become the cause of future events.

Evidence for God. Natural world is too beautiful and complex to have come about by chance. Reason to respect and worship God by looking after it.

Effects of modern living.
Industrial waste (can be radioactive which is difficult to remove). Increased levels of CO2 emissions. Causes global warming. Leads to droughts, floods, famine, destruction of crops, ruined natural habitat (lost homes) & rising sea levels.

What are the problems caused by pollution?
CO2 causes acid rain. Too much PESTICIDE causes an imbalance to the eco system. TOXIC CHEMICALS e.g fertilisers kill wildlife in rivers (algae grows quickly). OIL SPILLS harm environment.

What are the problems caused by global warming? (include solutions)
Melting ice caps= rising sea levels, disappearing land(polar bears). Severe weather e.g. droughts & floods. Changing sea temps= dying sea life/reefs. Increased cancer risk from harmful sun rays. We should use: renewable energy, less energy, recycle.

Destruction of natural habitat (include definition):
'Actions which lead to natural homes of animals and plants being destroyed'. Pollution. Deforestation upsets balance of CO2 in the atmosphere & destroys homes. Rainforests contain medicinal plants. +national parks, replant trees.

Use and abuse of natural resources:
Humans rely heavily on fossil fuels (travelling). Exploiting natural environment. Increased levels of pollution. Oil will run out if we dont cut down on use or use renewable energy resources.

"Preservation of the natural environment and animals". E.g. turtle hatcherys and renewable energy.

What are 4 organisations for conservation?
Green Peace- encourage sustainable & renewable energy, campaign against damage to environment. WWF protect endangered species. A Rocha focus on protecting God's creation (Christian). Earth Sangha (Buddist) restore planet & grow endangered plants.

1986- Assisi declaration (declare support for WWF). 1992- Rio de Janeiro (first earth summit). 1995- Ohito Declaration (need to take action and reinforce link between humans and nature). 2002- Johannesburg (world summit on sustainable development).

An excess of anything leading to environmental problems, e.g. an oil spillage leads to pollution in the sea which kills sea life.

The heating up of the earth's atmosphere, leading to climatic change.

Gases in the earth's atmosphere. They allow the sun's rays to enter our atmosphere but then trap them, causing a heating effect.
