Proposed by Waltser. A theory that states that people get into relationships with a partner of similar attractiveness.

Physical attractiveness is only one thing that determines the strength of a relationship. There are gender differences, men consider a womans attractiveness to be very important whereas women don't, men can compensate with non physical features.

Proposed by Waltser, assumes that couples strive to achieve fairness in a relationship. Inequity = disatisfaction. Equity = satisfaction, therefore maintaining a relationship.

Breakdown; realising that there's a dissatisfaction, Intrapsychic; focus on the partners faults, dyadic; alert partner of the dissatisfaction, social; the breakup is aired to friends and family, grave dressing; prepare for life after the relationship

Akert found that the role the partner played in the decision to end the relationship was the most powerful predictor of the impact of the breakup on that person. The person that didn't initiate the breakdown were more miserable.
