the guards were informed of their duties, roll calls and their responsibility to ensure that the instituition runs smoothly

to draw up the rules and to suggest punishments, physical violence was not used

daily psychometric tests to measure factors such as depression and the extent to which the prisoners and the guards identified with their own group, stress levels of the prisoners and guards,

the guards did not develop a group identity until day 3, prisoners showed self interest,

group behavior may be pro or antisocial, the breakdown of groups and powerlessness create the conditions for tyranny, falling groups create problems because when people cannot create a social system they will accept extreme solutions said by others

a BPS ethics committee reviewed the study, participants were screened and gave fully informed consent, security guards and paramedics were present, a committee could stop the experiment at any time, clinical psychologists monitored participants
