Regulating Heart Rate- Nerves and Hormones (4.1.2)

?
What does the blood supply the tissues with?
Glucose, oxygen, amino acids and fatty acids
1 of 11
What is taken away from cells in the blood?
Carbon dioxide and urea.
2 of 11
What does the heart's pacemaker do?
It initiates the spread of electrical impulses to the AVN and purkyne tissue.
3 of 11
What does myogenic mean?
Muscle tissue can initiate its own contractions.
4 of 11
What is a pacemaker?
Region of tissue in the right atrium wall that can generate an impulse.
5 of 11
What is the cardiovascular centre?
Specific region of the medulla oblongata that monitors levels of physical activity, blood CO2 conc. and blood pressure.
6 of 11
Describe how exercise affects heart rate.
Increased activity-higher cell resp. rate. More co2 produced-lowers plasma pH. Detected by chemoreceptors. Nerve impulses sent to CV centre. Increased freq. of n.i sent along accelerator nerve to SAN. SAN sends more frequent electrical excitation.
7 of 11
Describe how adrenaline affects heart rate.
Has direct effect on cardiac muscle tissue and increases heart rate for fight or flight response.
8 of 11
Describe how reduced activity affects heart rate.
Opposite to exercise, but using vagus nerve.
9 of 11
Describe how raised blood pressure affects heart rate.
Detected by pressure receptors in corotid arteries. Nerve impulses to CV centre, then along vagus nerve to SAN.
10 of 11
Describe how limb movement affects heart rate.
Triggers stretch receptors in muscles. Nerve impulses to CV centre. Increased frequency of nerve impulses sent along accelerator nerve to SAN.
