What is gentrification?
When an area is renovated making it more attractive for more affluential people. They then move in and spend more in the economy, making businesses thrive, house prices rising and an increased overall value through investment.

What are the benefits of gentrification?
Reduces crime in the long run, increases connective-ness, increased land usage, increased employment and life expectancy.

What are the negatives of gentrification?
Conflict with original residents in the short run, Tottenham riots, as they are unable to afford the higher prices. They have to leave the area in the long run.

What is studentification and what pros & cons does it have?
When students move to an area for university for example, they spend great amounts of money in the area, thriving local businesses. However, can cause conflict with original residents, over-crowding and increased government spending on damaged land.

Physical factors, accessibility and connective-ness, historical development and local & national planning.

How do physical factors affect a place?
Due to natural disasters & climate change, areas may have to build solar farms and defence strategies, changing the area.

How does accessibility and connective-ness affect a place?
Railways & airports and super fast broadband increases tourism as it is easier to access the area. Decreases geographical immobility. Increased migration & investment. Increased house prices.

How does historic development affect a place?
Developing museums can increase tourism due to a diversified area (Bronte). Also, the creating of transition towns retains sovereignty.

How does local and national planning affect a place?
Creating science & business parks (Canary Wharf & Newcastle) increases overseas investment and attracts higher income labour through the function change.

What are the 4 priorities for regeneration ?
Gated communities, sink estates, commuter villages and declining rural settlements

How are gated communities beneficial ?
A community or housing estate with strictly controlled security. More attractive for higher income families, decreases crime, decreases poverty, greater spending in the economy.

How is the reduction/regeneration of sink estates beneficial?
A council estate regenerated will reduce crime rates associated with drugs and violence. It will reduce the levels of deprivation in the area and make it more attractive for foreign investment.

How are commuter villages beneficial and not?
A town whose residents work somewheres else, usually in urban cities. It is a cheaper area for people to live. However, environmental degradation from travel and low levels of engagement due to travel.

How are declining rural settlements bad for an area?
The mechanisation of farming and lack of employment causes high levels of out migration which reduces the amount being spent in the economy.

What are the different factors that affect lived experience and engagement?
Age, Gender, Ethnicity, Length of residence and level of deprivation.

How does the age of an individual affect their lived experience and engagement?
The older and younger generations are usually more engaged in the area as they have more free time than the economically active. The elderly are more likely to take part in elections as they have lived there longer and want to keep historical beliefs

How does the gender of an individual affect their lived experience and engagement?
Women are typically more engaged due to the tradition of non working females (school activity usually females). However, females feel less able to engage due to sexism, which is being reduced.

How does the ethnicity of an individual affect their lived experience and engagement?
Migrants have different views depending on how they have been treated, they may have suffered from racism and want to create a difference in the community.

How does the length of residence of an individual affect their lived experience and engagement?
The longer people have lived in an area, the more engaged they are as they want the best for the community, University students may not care about the area.

How does the level of deprivation of an individual affect their lived experience and engagement?
The more deprived, the less educated, so possibly less likely to engage in elections.

Changing the corporate image of an area to increase foreign investment.
