Reductionism v Holism

HideShow resource information
What is Holism?
The idea that it only makes sense to study an experience as a whole rather than break it down to smaller parts
1 of 12
What does reductionist mean?
The belief that behaviour can only be understood by breaking it down into simpler components
2 of 12
What is biological reductionism?
Explains all behaviour from a biological perspective
3 of 12
What is environmental reductionism?
Explains all behaviour from an environmental perspective
4 of 12
What does the levels of explanation model argue?
Different ways of looking at same behaviour, filters down+progressively look at component parts
5 of 12
What is the highest level?
Cultural and social explanations, least reductionist
6 of 12
What is the middle level?
Psychological explanations of behaviour e.g. cognitive explanations
7 of 12
What is the lowest level?
Biological explanations, most reductionist
8 of 12
What behaviours can only be studied when a group is present?
Support for holism, conformity+deindividuation, Stanford Prison study behaviour could not be explained by looking at individuals=holism provides more complete understanding
9 of 12
Issue with the scientific method in holism
Humanism lacks empirical evidence+based on abstract ideas, also cannot find solutions as cannot establish which factors are most important
10 of 12
Scientific strength of the reductionist approach
Breaks down behaviour into operationalised variables, can conduct experiments that are controlled and reliable
11 of 12
How can this lead to loss of validity?
E.g. biological explanations don't consider context of behaviours, drug treatments only affect symptoms
