The reaction in which both, oxidation and reduction occur at the same time.
1 of 11
What is oxidation?
The gain in oxygen, increase in oxidation state, the loss of electrons or gain of hydrogen.
2 of 11
What is reduction?
The loss of oxygen, decrease in oxidation state, the gain in electrons or gain in hydrogen.
3 of 11
What's a reducing agent?(reductant)
That helps reduction take place. It is oxidised itself. It loses or donates electrons and this causes reduction to take pleace in the other ion/atom as it gains them.
4 of 11
What's an oxidising agent?(oxidant)
That helps oxidation take place. It is reduced itself. It takes/accepts electrons from the other ion and hence causes the other atom/ion to be oxidised.
5 of 11
Name 2 oxidising agents and their color changes.
Acidified Potassium Dichromate VI (K2Cr2O7) : orange to green and Acidified Potassium Permanganate VII (KMnO4): pink to colourless.
6 of 11
Name 1 reducing agent and its colour change.
Aqueous Potassium Iodide(KI): colourless to brown
7 of 11
Test for presence of oxidising agent.
Add aquesous potassium iodide which turns from colourless to brown, if an oxidising agent is present.
8 of 11
Test for presence of reducing agent.
Add acidified potassium dichromate VI which turns from orange to green, if a reducing agent is present.
9 of 11
What is rusting.
Rusting of iron and steel is an example of a redox reaction. It needs oxygen (or air) and water.
10 of 11
Combustion is an example of ________?
Oxidation, as it involves a gain in oxygen.
