What are saprotrophs?
Organisms that live on non-living organic matter and release enzymes to absorb nutrients. (Trophs: links with feeding.)
1 of 12
3 steps in saprotrophic feeding?
1). Saprotrophs secrete enzymes onto dead + waste material 2). Enzymes digest the material into small molecules which are then absorbed into the saprotroph’s body. 3). The molecules are stored or respired to release energy
2 of 12
What do plants use nitrogen for?
• Synthesising DNA + RNA • Nucleotide found in nitrogenous base • Nitrogen needed to form amino acids which is essential to make proteins (more growth)
3 of 12
Give 3 ways nitrogen in the air is fixed?
1). Lightning, 2).The Haber process, 3). Nitrogen-fixing bacteria
4 of 12
Name the nitrogen-fixing bacteria found free-living in the soil?
Azotobacter
5 of 12
Name the nitrogen-fixing bacteria found in the root nodules of leguminous plants?
Rhizobium
6 of 12
What is the role of leghaemoglobin in root nodules?
Keep conditions anaerobic
7 of 12
What is the name of the enzyme used to reduce nitrogen gas to ammonium ions?
Nitrogen reductase
8 of 12
What is ammonification?
The release of ammonium ions by bacteria involved in the putrefaction of proteins found in dead or waste organic matter
9 of 12
Name the process which causes the oxidation of ammonium to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate?
Nitrification
10 of 12
Name the bacteria that oxidises ammonium ions to nitrites
Nitrosomonas
