Crushing a hard disk makes it unusable and data cannot be accesed from it. Disadvantage- destroyed hardware is worthless and there is an enviromental impact as it goes to landfill.

Q6 Permanent data deletion by data destruction software and its advantages.
Overwrites the hard disk with random data, ensuring that the original data can no longer be discovered. Advantages- Hard drive can be reused/sold or donated to charity. No enviromental damage either.

Q7 Explain why data is NOT permanently deleted from the hard disk when files are deleted or even when the hard disk is reformatted.
Files still exist on hard disk, but location for files been deleted. Files will not be detected by operating system so appears there is no data on the hard disk - even though there is. Data also could be recoved with specialist software.

•IT department could carry out work using propietary data destruction software. Benefit- increased data security. •Data destruction company could carry out the work, although this would be more costly than carrying out the task in-house.

If digital device is in working order it can be traded in; for example, the Apple Store will give an allowance for a trade in mobile phone or tablet against a replacement; the store is responsible for product disposal.

They: •Permanently delete data on hard disks •Break down equipment to be recycled •Safely dispose of hazardous waste •Dispose of batteries Benefit- disposal and recycling will comply with all the legislation. Drawback- May cost leisure centre.
