Recycling

Includes information on the carbon cycle, the nitrogen cycle and keeping decomposers working.

?
Why does carbon need to be recycled?
Carbon needs to be recycled so it can become available again to other living organisms.
1 of 18
How is Carbon Dioxide removed from the air?
Via photosynthesis from plants.
2 of 18
How are carbon compounds passed along the food chain?
Via feeding.
3 of 18
How is carbon dioxide released into the air?
By animals respiring, by soil and fungi acting as decomposers and by burning fossil fuels (combustion).
4 of 18
Which body absorbs atmospheric carbon dioxide?
The oceans.
5 of 18
What do marine organisms do with carbonate?
They make shells from them, which become limestone rocks.
6 of 18
How does the carbon in limestone return to the air?
During volcanic eruptions or weathering of the rocks.
7 of 18
How is nitrogen used in plants?
Plants take in nitrogen as nitrates, they use nitrates to create proteins for growth.
8 of 18
How are nitrogen compounds passed along the food chain?
Via feeding.
9 of 18
What happens to nitrogen compounds in dead plants/animals?
They are broken down by decomposers and returned to the soil.
10 of 18
What are decomposers?
Soil bacteria.
11 of 18
What do decomposers do?
The convert proteins into ammonia and urea.
12 of 18
What does nitrifying bacteria do?
Nitrfying bacteria converts ammonia into nitrates.
13 of 18
What does denitrfying bacteria do?
Denitrifying bacteria converts nitrates into nitrogen gas.
14 of 18
Where is nitrogen-fixing bacteria found?
In the root nodules.
15 of 18
What does nitrogen-fixing bacteria do?
Nitrogen-fixing bacteria fixes nitrogen gas. This occurs via the action oof lightening.
16 of 18
What is needed to break down dead material in soil?
Oxygen and a suitable pH.
17 of 18
How can decay be stopped?
Waterlogged soils will prevent decay because there is a lack of oxygen in them and acidic conditions will also prevent decay.
