a 28 year old priest from Oxford (Yorkist stronghold) and teacher of Lambert Simnel

What was the original plan? What did it change to?
Symonds decided to pass Simnel off as the younger boy, Richard of York. However, in the light of fresh rumours about the Earl of Warwick, he seems to have changed his mind and to have decided that Simnel would now impersonate Warwick.

Winter of 1486

Where did they travel to and why?
Symonds took his protégé to Ireland, a centre of Yorkist support ever since Richard, Duke of York had been Lord Lieutenant there in the 1450s. Henry was also unpopular there given his failure to confirm the Earl of Kildare as Lord Deputy of Ireland

Margaret, Dowager Duchess of Burgundy; she sent a force of 2,000 German soldiers to Ireland

How did he initially react?
February 1487 a few lesser nobles were declared traitors and Edward IV’s queen, Elizabeth Woodville the Marquess of Dorset, were put under house arrest and deprived of their lands. The real Earl of Warwick was paraded through London.

What made the rebellion more serious?
The sudden flight of the John de la Pole, Earl of Lincoln to join the elusive Lord Lovell in Flanders at the court of his aunt, Margaret of Burgundy

How did Henry then react?
Henry showed his concern by offering a pardon to such long-standing rebels as Thomas Broughton

4th June 1487 at Furness in Lancashire

Why did they fail to gather much support?
Because the English people distrusted the Irish soldiers and were tired of civil war

Newark at East Stoke on 16th June 1487

Lincoln’s forces numbered about 8,000 and Henry’s possibly totalled 12,000 but many held back even on the battlefield itself

Lincoln, Schwarz, Broughton and Thomas Geraldine, the Irish leader, all perished, along with nearly half their army. Lovell either disappeared or was killed

What happened to Lambert Simnel and Richard Symonds?
were both captured. Symonds was sentenced to life imprisonment in a bishops prison. Simnel was made him a turnspit in the royal kitchen and later promoted to be the king's falconer
