RCT STRENGTH- Sherif et al (1961)
Within Stage 2, competition was introduced which exacerbated in-group prejudice of those in an out-group. Each groups burned their flags, with the Rattler's making such comments as "we will beat them".
1 of 8
RCT STRENGTH- Aronson et al (1978)
Had a classroom full of white, black, and Hispanic students, and they had to learn about a topic but could only do so from co-operation from other ppl. He found that students had higher self-esteem and liking for their class after the 6-week period.
2 of 8
RCT STRENGTH- Filndra and Pearson-Merkowitz (2013)
Found that in a perceived increase in the influx of immigrants did a more stringent immigration policy take place, but this was only in the presence of times of economic hardship- thus supporting the theory of zero-sum.
3 of 8
RCT STRENGTH of application
It helps society reduce the prejudice shown by additionally reducing the conflict and competing for resources between the two groups. Using super-ordinate goals should reduce hostility overall.
4 of 8
RCT WEAKNESS- Brown (1996)
Found that superordinate goals may increase antagonism if the achieved goal isn't reached, as each group will begin to blame each other. Liking for the outgroup may also decrease if each group doesn't have a distinct and complementary role to play.
5 of 8
RCT WEAKNESS- Tyerman and Spencer (1983)
Replicated Robbers Cave using English boy scouts, and they were divided into four 'patrol groups', in which competition didn't affect pre-existing friendship ties. There was no increase in in-group solidarity.
6 of 8
RCT WEAKNESS- Billig (1976)
Noted that negative reactions to the out-group emerged beginning at the end of stage 1, thus supporting SIT as opposed to RCT.
7 of 8
RCT WEAKNESS- Fiske (2004)
Said that RCT only has limited and inconsistent support, with a perceived and/or symbolic threat causing more prejudice than an actual threat- suggests theory should be called "perceived conflict theory", and not "Realistic"
