What was Rahe's research method?
A correlation using questionnaires and medical records.

What was Rahe's sample?
Opportunist sample of 2664 sailors on board 3 US navy cruisers. Mean age was 22.3 yrs. Came from a range of backgrounds, but were generally all healthy (less than 10% of the original sample- 2684- was lost).

When did the pps fill in (self-report) a military version of the original SRE (schedule of recent experience) questionnaire.
Every 6 months for 2 years prior to their duty on the ship.

What was the pps LCU (life change unit) score based on?
The total amount of readjustment needed due to each stressful life event.

Why did a research doctor go on board the ship?
After the ships overseas assignment (2 ships were in Vietnam and 1 was in the Mediterranean sea) the doctor looked at the sailors' health records.

What information was recorded about the illness?
Information about number, type and severity was recorded. (only new illness' were recorded)

When was a visit to the sick bay not counted?
If the sailor had reported for the same illness before (only counted once). And if it was thought that the salior was trying to get out of work.

How was Rahe's research double blind?
The pps were not aware that their LCU score and illness would be correlated, nor were the medical officers on board ships.

What was Rahe interested in?
What level of LCU score would would lead to illness in a generally healthy group of pps, if any.

How did Rahe address some ethical issues?
By keeping the names of the pps confidential so it was not possible to trace an illness to an individual sailor.
