Rag
This is a pattern of notes a bit like a scale.

Tal
Is a cycle of beats that is repeated and improvised on during a performance.

Sam
Is the first beat In a tal and is often stressed by the musician.

Alap
Is a slow introductory section where the notes are introduced against a drone. There is also no regular pulse and no percussion

Gat
Is a fixed composition improvised in and played by the solo instrument. It is also the section where the percussion and clear pulse enters

Jhalla
Is the final section that is faster and also more virtuosic and decorative than the rest of the piece.

Sitar
A plucked string instrument with a long neck.

Tabla
A pair of drums the right one being called a Dayan and is smaller, made of wood and plays a higher pitch. The left one is called a Bayan and is made of metal, larger and therefore has a lower pitch.

Is the smaller of the Tabla's

Is the larger of the Tabla's

Jhaptal
A 10 beat cycle (2+3+2+3)

Tinta
A 16 beat cycle (4+4+4+4)

Alap
A slow section only for the sitar, has no regular pulse, introduces the notes and mood of the Rag and the melodic line is decorated with slides and pitch bends.

Meends
Slides and pitch bends that decorate the alap section.

Gat
The second section where the tabla enters, the sitar plays a fixed composition, then the sitar and tabla improvise the sitar based on the Gat and the Tabla based on the tal. Towards the end of this esction the tempo increases.

Tihai
A short melody or rhythm played three times and ends on the sam.

Jhalla
Where the music is fast and the sitar strigs are strummed to make rythmic excitement.
