What is the body's first line of defence?
The skin is a physical barrier. If the skin breaks then your blood clots and forms a temporary barrier. We also produce pathogen-destroying chemicals which leave the body in places with no skin, for example tears. They contain enzymes, which is like
1 of 8
What is the immune system?
It is the body's second line of defense. Its complex network defends our body from infection. It keeps a record of which germs it has defeated before so if they come back the body can deal with them quicker.
2 of 8
How do antibodies prevent infection?
They latch onto antigens, and clump pathogens together to make it easier to destroy them. It also stops the antigens from attaching onto another cell and harming it.
3 of 8
How do antitoxins prevent infection?
Antitoxins are released by Lymphocytes to neutralize toxins released by the pathogen.
4 of 8
How do Phagocytes destroy pathogens?
Phagocytes are attracted to pathogens. They attach themselves to them and the cell membrane surrounds the pathogen, trapping it inside. Then enzymes inside the Phagocyte work to break down the Pathogen and destroy it.

What term describes an organism which transmits a disease?
A vector
6 of 8
Which of these do Lymphocytes not produce? Antigens, Antitoxins or Antibodies.

Why is scientific proof only provisional?
