an open question is where respondents are given space to write what they want in their own words

a closed question is where the respondent is presented with a list of possible options and must tick the one which is correct/which they most agree with

What are the strengths of questionnaires?
relatively easy and cheap so can target a large sample, gains lots of data, closed questions are good for gathering quantitative data, respondent's shouldn't have problems answering and so makes them quick and easy

What are the weaknessess of questionnaires?
closed questions unlikely to provide detailed answers, many people can't be bothered and so you receive a low response rate, closed questions reduce validity as people tick the box nearest to what they think, any leading questions may bias answers
