What is Relative Atomic Mass of an element?
the average mass of atoms of an element, taking into account the mass and amount of each isotope it contains.
1 of 18
What is the Relative Formula Mass of a compound?
The sum of the relative atomic masses of each of the atoms in a compound.
2 of 18
What is the smallest unit of an element?
Atom
3 of 18
What is the definition of a molecule?
Two or more (chemically bonded) atoms.
4 of 18
What is a compound?
Two or more elements bonded together.
5 of 18
How do you calculate the amount of substance (number of moles)?
Amount (mol)= mass of substance (g) / atomic or formula mass (g/mol)
6 of 18
What is the conservation of mass?
The rule which states the total mass of the reactants must equal the total mass of the product.
7 of 18
What is titration?
A technique used to find out how much an acid is needed to neautralise an alkali.
8 of 18
What does it mean when a reactant is in 'excess'?
When the amount of a reactant is greater than the amount that can react.
9 of 18
What is meant by the term 'Limiting Reactant'?
When two chemicals react together, one chemical is often completley used up during the reaction. When this chemical is used up, it stops the reaction going any further, thus making limiting.

What does Avogadros Law state?
That equal volumes of gas, given that they have the same pressure and temperature, will have the same number of particles or molecules.
11 of 18
How much volume does one mole of gas take up at room temperature and pressure?
24 dm(cubed)
12 of 18
What is Avagadros Constant and what does it represent?
6.02 x 10^23 (the number of paricles in one mole of any substance).
13 of 18
What is the percentage yield?
The percentage yield is used to compare the actual yield obtained from a reaction with the maximum theoretical yield.
14 of 18
What would a percentage yield of 100% mean?
That no product had been lost.
15 of 18
How do you calculate the percentage yield?
percentage yield = (yield from reaction / maximum theoretical yield) x 100
16 of 18
Why is it not always possible to obtain he calculated amount of product?
1 - If the reaction is reversible, it might not be completed. 2 - Some product could be lost when it is seperated from the reaction mixture. 3- Some of the reactant may react in different ways to the expected reaction.
17 of 18
What is atom economy?
Atom economy is a measure of the amount of the reactant that ends up in a useful product.
