Observation
The researcher stands outside the group and attempts to see the world through the subjects' eyes

Questions are informal and open-ended; they are merely to guide the interview in the right direction. Respondents can answer freely

The study of sources such as newspapers, looking for patterns and trends in the representation of a particular group in that product
