What are the observations if carbonate ions are present?
Effervescence; The solid disappears; Carbon dioxide released
1 of 10
What is the test for carbon dioxide?
Bubble gas through limewater in another test tube using a delivery tube. If carbonate ions are present, the limewater changes from colourless to milky.
2 of 10
How do you test for the ammonium ion using sodium hydroxide?
Place a few cm of sodium hydroxide in a test tube and add a spatula measure of the solid sample; warm gently. Test any gas evolved using damp red litmus paper or damp universal indicator paper or using a glass rod dipped in conc hydrochloric acid.

What are the observations if an ammonium ion is present?
Pungent gas is evolved. Damp indicator paper changes to blue. White smoke appears with glass rod.
4 of 10
How do you test for iodine?
Add a few cm of starch solution to the sample. If a blue-black colour is observed, then iodine is present.
5 of 10
Is ammonia gas acid or alkaline?
Alkaline

What is the test for hydrogen?
Use a burning splint and it gives a pop.
7 of 10
What is the test for oxygen?
Relights a glowing splint.

What is the test for hydrogen chloride?
Gives white fumes with ammonia solution and turns universal indicator paper red.
