It is where most of the chemical reactions of the cell take place. 3 of 12 Mitochondria Small rod-shaped structures which release energy from sugar during aerobic respiration 4 of 12 Ribosomes Small ball-shaped structures in the cytoplasm, where proteins are made. 5 of 12 Cell Wall The outside of the cell membrane. It is made of cellulose, which is strong to support the cell. It can be found in plant cells. 6 of 12 Permanent Vacuole A fluid-filled cavity which uses the liquid inside, called sap, for support. 7 of 12 Chloroplasts Small discs found in the cytoplasm. They contain green pigments called chlorophyll which traps light energy for photosynthesis. 8 of 12 Red Blood Cells They lack most cell structures but contain large amounts of haemoglobin, which allows them to carry oxygen. 9 of 12 Muscle Cells These contain contractile proteins, which allow the cell to shorten. 10 of 12 Palisade Cells These contain many chloroplasts for photosynthesis. 11 of 12 Root Hair Cells These have a long extension, which projects into the soil in order to absorb more water by increasing surface area. 12 of 12
