What do they contain?
It has a transmitter which emits two beams of red light and a photo detector to measure light

How do they work?
The transmitter and photo detector are placed on either side of a thin part of the body (finger). The light passes through the tissue and on its way, some light is absorbed by the blood, reducing the amount of light detected.

What does the absorption depend on?
The colour of the blood, as this depends on the bloods oxyhaemoglobin content.

How much oxyhaemoglobin do healthy people have in their arteries?
They have at least 95% oxyhaemoglobin and no more than 5% reduced.

What does reflection pulse oximetry do?
It reflects light off of red blood cells instead of shining a light through the body.
