scotts work recognised as first major work of scepticism, he was well-read, interested in magic, He paid attention to Johan Weyers De Praestigis Daemonium 1593 which said that most witches were suffering from extreme sadness

high profile cases took place at Chelmsford, John Samon accused and acquitted in 1561, 1570 and 1572, and in 1566 3 women were charged (1 hung, 1 sentenced to a year in prison, and 1 acquitted)
