Social Norms
explicit and implicit rules that specify what forms of behaviour, beliefs and attitudes are acceptable within a given society. The standards of acceptable behaviour are learnt through socialisation

Maladaptive behaviour that renders a person unable to deal with normal life.

Lack of mental health due to lack of: Independence, Positive view of self, actualisation, undistorted view of reality, resistance to stress and environmental adaptability.

Limitations of deviating from social norms
Ethnocentric bias, Dependent on context/era/time

Limitations of failure to function adequately
Maladaptive does not mean abnormal e.g. bungee jumping and abnormality is not always accompanied with failure to function adequately.

Overdemanding criteria, unclear how far person must deviate to be classed as abnormal, not applicable to all cultures.
