What are the key assumptions of the Cognitve approach for explaining depression?
-To explain behaviour we must refer to thought processes. -We can make inferences about the mind by observing people's behaviour. -Depression is the result of faulty thought processes.

What are the behavioural characteristics of depression?
-Disruption to sleep- insomnia/hypersomnia. -Appetite may increase or decrease. -Aggression & self harm -some sufferers are aggressive towards others or towards themsleves. -Activity levels - reduced energy which makes sufferers withdraw from life.

-Lowered self-esteem/mood- more than feeling sad -Anger - directed at others or self (can lead to self harm)

-Poor concentration - cannot stick at a task & finds decision making hard. -Attending to & dwelling on the negative - pay more attention to the negative aspects of a situation/themselves, with a bias towards recalling unhappy events/negative aspects
