Assumption of the psychodynamic approach

Id is the Impulsive and instinctive part of our personality

The ego is the rational part and is in touch with reality

This is our sense of morals and ideal self

According to this approach these three parts are often in conflict with one another and will influence our behaviour.

Another assumption is that our behaviour is influenced by different levels of consciousness and ego defences.

He propose that the mind is like an iceberg and what goes on in the mind lies beneath the surface

According to Freud a major influence on personality is the dominance of a part of the core personality, the ID, Ego or Superego.

low moral control and is most like to have narcissism

Could result in a person becoming overly rational

Could result in a person being very judgmental and emotionally frozen

what did freud suggest?
Freud suggested that how we are as adults is dependent on our childhood upbringing

Oral fixation
An oral fixation combined with a punishing parental style leads to an aggressive personality with negative thought patterns

Non aggressive
but if the parental style is indulgent, the character is dependent, easily fooled and over indulgent

Anal fixation
If fixation occurs in the potty training (anal stage) and the parents are punishing a person is obstinate, fussy and miserly

over indulgent
If however, parents are over indulgent then this is the classic binge character, generous, disorganised, and prone to losing control of drinking, eating, spending and so on

Strengths and weaknesses of Biological Approach
One strength of the biological approach is that it has made a valuable contribution to our understanding of human behaviours and disorders.
