organisation
sorting out the information you are going to remember
1 of 7
example of organisation
use of hierarchies
2 of 7
use of hierarchies
remembering words by putting them into categories before you begin to learn them. eg: if words you have to remember are red, cylinder, letter, first class, decide on overall category of a post box to remember words
3 of 7
why hierarchies work
1) information is processed in a meaningful way, because it is linked to an overall category 2) method provides retrieval cue of over all category
4 of 7
supporting evidence of hierarchies
Bower et al (1969) : asked participants to remember 112 words, 1st group-random order 2nd group-words were given in organised way, in categories. 2nd group-remembered three and a half times as many words as the first group.
5 of 7
grounding of evidence of hierarchies
supports theory because participants in the second group were much more successful than the first. However, can't be sure whether it is a good tecnique-only 1 experiment, dont know strength of memories of those assessed.
6 of 7
limitations of hierarchies
could result in errors-if words were associated around one item, it would be easy to assume that items is also included.
